Winter Workout: Shoveling!

Did you know that a 150-pound person burns more than 400 calories per hour of heavy snow shoveling? How’s that for a quick post-holiday fat burner? But before you race out to the driveway, take some concrete steps to protect your health – and your back.

  • Dress appropriately and in layers, so you can take them off individually as you heat up.
  • Choose a shovel with a handle that is waist high to avoid bending too far down and placing undue strain on your back.
  • Stretch before you go outside.
  • Breathe regularly and try to push the snow instead of lifting it. Avoid twisting your back.
  • If you must lift snow, take small amounts at a time and lift with your legs, not your back.
  • Take regular breaks and stop shoveling the moment you feel any pain or strain.
