The Warrior Heart

02/22/2010 by Laura Lewis

Courage:The  state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution; bravery.

~American Heritage Dictionary

It takes courage to succeed in all aspects of life. Have you ever thought of the act of living from that perspective? Most of us would have to agree that life isn’t always a stroll in the park. Yet to live a better life, a successful life, a peaceful life, a healthy life, a life filled with love we have to take action along our journey that  helps us summon up enough courage to move in a new direction or take on a new challenge.

The other evening I was talking to my eleven-year old son Baron. He was very emotional over schoolwork. “I hate school, Mom. It’s too hard! I can’t do it!” he blurted out as tears streamed down his cheeks. "Did you know I have a warrior’s heart?" I asked obviously taking him off guard. He shook his head, suddenly attentive to my words, words which have often been ignored in similar situations in the past. "Baron, Mama has overcome great odds and succeeded where others have failed. I have won awards, been a leader and survived great tragedy.” I passionately exclaimed,  “Do you know why?—I have a warrior's heart and you do too! You must decide to be courageous and live with your warrior heart being awake! Then nothing can stop you. You can do this! Be courageous!"

He smiled at me with a new sense of calm. I could tell he was empowered by my words. School and all that goes along with it can take up a significant amount of time, of life, as an eleven year old. This moment of realization was a big step for him. And, it was one of those moments where I thought “Wow! That was great! Where did that come from?” I smiled and felt emotion well up inside of me as I reflected upon what courage I have had to have in my lifetime to face various challenges which could have taken me down for the count. Sharing a bit of my story with Baron turned out to be a reminder for both of us—that our warrior hearts may help us to have courage, to be fearless in the face of challenges.

You too can be courageous, even in the face of challenges that may seem insurmountable. Stop for a moment. Close your eyes. Do you feel it? It’s the beat of your own warrior heart!  Can you think of moments where your warrior heart has helped you? Or where it may be helpful for you to do so in the future?

Yes absolutely I think whether you call it a warrior heart or passion or inspiration or courage, most of us could use a little more of that. I agree with Scurvy Boy that we have become too apathetic and quick to accept bad deals from our employeers, friends, family and indeed also political leaders.

Nice essay and good comment. I've spent years swallowing anger rather than using it to my benefit as a strengthening and constructive force. Thanks for the inspiration.

I really like the term warrior heart, especially used in a non-combat situation. In my opinion we, as a society, have lost touch with our basic humanity -- both in terms of compassion and also passion. We have become too passive and apathetic to forces big and small that we think are "out of our control." No. We have enormous power as individuals not only to change the course of our own lives but of history itself. We must take personal responsibility for our own failures and resolve ourselves to fight for justice and rights at every turn. Thomas Jefferson said (I'm paraphrasing) that the level of tyranny we live under is that which we are willing to accept. Well, I think that applies not only to tyranny by reckless governments and corporations but also by our own punitive, self-defeating attitudes.
