Healing QA: Advice On Raising Kids For New Mom?
08/28/2012 | 12:28 PM
Q:
I'm a new mom. Do you have any advice on raising kids?
A:
One thing that Ayurveda teaches us about people—including young children—is that each person is born with a basic constitutional nature. This is relevant in terms of the best food to eat and certain illnesses to be particularly observant about, but it also means that we have a certain temperament as well. When raising your children, be sure to raise them as exactly who they need to be as based on their fundamental nature, and not based on who you think they should be. If you were really into the arts as a child but your son or daughter is really into sports, then let them flourish as much as they can in that type of experience. If you happen to have a particularly analytical mind but your child is very free flowing in their thought, then give them the opportunity to explore their nature as a gift. Regardless of who your child is, you will both benefit from enriching each others’ lives in whatever way suits your respective natures.
