Healing QA: Alternative Treatments For Lichen Schlerosis?
10/17/2012 | 03:22 PM
Is there a treatment/cure for Lichen Schlerosis? I hate using strong steroids to only just manage it and can't take estrogen as breast cancer is in my family. Help!
Lichen sclerosus is one of those diseases that Western medical practitioners often label as incurable. No matter how many creams, ointments, and—as you mention—steroids are used, the disorder as well as the pain associated with it continues.
The good news is that this is a condition that can be carefully and precisely addressed through Ayurvedic intervention. The nature of Ayurveda calls on us to identify the root cause of a disease, the nature of the imbalances it causes in the body, and other considerations specific to the individual with the affliction. With the right combination of herbal remedies, treatments including herbalized oil enemas, and proper dietary changes, the pain and discomfort associated with the symptoms of Lichen Sclerosus can be greatly reduced.
The bad news is that your condition is a result of your individual body’s needs and therefore neither me nor anyone else can recommend a regimen that addresses the disease at its root without direct observation of your body and symptoms. I therefore recommend you consult with a trained practitioner who can guide you through the process of addressing the disease with Ayurvedic therapies. However, I can tell you that eating a vegetarian diet, refraining from eating the last four to five hours before you go to bed, refraining from consuming alcohol and coffee, practicing gentle yoga postures, and starting each morning with a cup of warm water will get you well on your way to finding greater balance in your body as a whole. Visit the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to learn more about finding an Ayurvedic practitioner who can help you with this disease.
