Healing QA: Are There Fast Foods That Are Actually Good For Me?

Q:

I am married, have three kids, work full time and always seem to be grabbing food on the run. (I live in the suburbs, so think drive-throughs.) Although I try to feed my kids and husband better than I feed myself (we always sit down for dinner most nights), I feel like I wouldn't get by without sugar and caffeine. They are the only things that keep me going from 3pm through the rest of the work day. Are there any fast foods you recommend that could actually be good for me?

A:

I’d like to steer you away from fast-food places in general, for even if they were serving you natural foods—which they’re usually not—they are serving them after they’ve been frozen, defrosted, heated up, fried, or had something else done to them.  If there is a place like a market or a fruit stand that serves fruit and vegetables on the go, consider eating those with something simple like hummus.  If a fast-food place is really the only place you can go, then consider eating the salads that they serve.   Ultimately, your goal must be to find food that is actually food (fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, oils), and not some distant relative of food.  When on the road, this is harder than ever.
