Q:

What do you use for toothpaste and taking care of your gums and teeth?

A:

The general trend in the West is to wear away the gums and teeth with all sorts of chemicals found in toothpaste. The teeth, gums, and mouth as a whole all need nourishment, and Ayurvedic tradition teaches us that oils nourish the body both on the inside and out.

To take care of my mouth, I gently brush with some licorice powder mixed with some sesame oil. An alternative is to dip the toothbrush into some salt water instead of the oil, which acts as a disinfectant. When done with brushing, I then oil the mouth using a mouthful of sesame oil that I swish around and gargle like mouthwash. This helps to strengthen the gums and relieve the mouth of sores and other maladies.
