How can I treat depression with Ayurveda?
Though the specific nature of one person's depression might be different from another's -- and often be informed by each person's constitution -- the incidence of symptoms typically associated with clinical depression in the West is considered in Ayurvedic traditions to be caused by an accumulation of disturbed emotions over a period of time. Ayurveda recognizes that a person's mind and body are intimately connected and fully ingrained within each other, so toxic, disturbed thoughts inform toxicity in the body and vice versa. Since depression can lead to toxicity in the body, some Ayurvedic practitioners may recommend a detoxification treatment known as Pancha Karma in which the person is purged of toxic matter existing in their body's various tissues. Beyond that, it may benefit a person suffering from depression to take herbs with antidepressant properties like ashwagandha and gotu kola.
