Q:

I suffer from really bad migraines, sometimes for days at a time. What can I do to get rid of them (aside from quitting my job)?

A:

Ayurveda considers most migraines to be triggered by either an excessive amount of movement and dryness as indicated by Vata imbalances, or by an excessive amount of heat as indicated by Pitta imbalances. If the migraines are accompanied by constipation, insomnia, and sharp, shooting bursts of pain, then they are likely based on a Vata imbalance and may be resolved with the consumption of oils like olive oil and sesame oil as well as the application of these oils to the skin. If the migraines are accompanied by burning sensations, profuse sweat, and irritability, then they are more likely based on a Pitta imbalance and may be resolved with the consumption of cooling foods like cow's milk and basmati rice as well as a reduction in physical exertion overall.
