Healing QA: What Is The First Thing You Do When Treating A Patient?

Q:
What is the first thing you try and put right when treating a patient?
A:
Ayurveda teaches us that resolving illness in a patient begins with establishing what the root cause of that illness may be. Two people might have hives, but one person might have it because they are overexerting themselves through excessive physical activity and overworking their skin’s ability to perspire, and another person might have hives because they’re eating excessive amounts of red meat and spicy foods. Since the root cause of any one patient’s imbalances are individual to them, the first step of treatment can be just as unique.
Generally, however, first steps for treating patients the Ayurvedic way include prescribing changes in diet, changes in eating habits (e.g. time and frequency of eating), consumption of certain herbs, various Ayurvedic treatments like oil massage, and a variety of Yogic practices.
