Healing QA: What Is Your Typical Ayurvedic Daily Routine?

Q:

I'd like to learn more about what's involved in maintaining an ayurvedic practice. What's your typical daily routine?

A:

I’m at a place in my life right now where I’ve managed to use the principles of Ayurveda over the years to create general balance in the body. I rarely get sick and I enjoy a general flexibility that allows me to sit for lengthy periods of time as I work toward a meditation practice. Ayurveda is a science for balancing the body, and Yoga is its sister science for balancing the mind. Given all of this, my current lifestyle is more based on the principles of Yoga: I work every day to find meditation and as a result find balance in my mind. This routine includes starting the day with Yoga postures, breathing practices, and concentration practices, as well as reading from the Bhagavad Gita. I then eat a small meal in the late morning, and then a final meal in the mid-afternoon. I sit again before going to bed.

To live an Ayurvedically-minded lifestyle, you’ll want to also practice Yoga postures and breathing practices, but do so in line with your imbalances. Look on my website to take a dosha test to learn which elements are most out of balance in your body and then follow the practices outlined in relation to them. Also, favor eating cooked, natural foods in small quantities and avoid eating for at least four or five hours before going to bed. This will give you a solid start on living the Ayurvedic way.
