Overview

The properly feng shui’d office is a place of work and prosperity. The right feng shui will help improve your happiness, productivity and success at work, whether you have a home office or not. Here are a brief list of do’s and don’ts to help you give your workplace the best feng shui possible.

Workplace Feng Shui Do’s

The following tips with help you thrive in your workspace:

  • Place your desk in a position that allows you to see the door of your office, be sure your back is supported by the wall. This is the power position.
  • Stay up to date with repairs and replacements. Broken light bulbs, rickety chairs, scratched desks—all these things represent blockages in the energy of the office. Fix them.
  • Keep your workspace separate from the bedroom. Work energy and sleep energy conflict with each other. If you have no choice, because you live in a studio or a small apartment, try to partition off your work area with a screen.
  • Representations of nature can help you build trust with coworkers and clients. Integrate organic materials into your work space. Wicker baskets, wooden paper trays, crystal paperweights, ceramic mugs and potted plants will encourage people to let down their guard with you.

Workplace Feng Shui Don’ts

Ensure that in your work life is trouble-free by following these guidelines:

  • Don’t keep brooms and mops in sight. They are thought to sweep away success.
  • Don’t sit in line with the door—you don’t want to be in the path of potential negative energy.
  • Don’t keep mirrors in your office. They can reflect negative energy from clients onto other people in the room.
  • Don't keep sharp plants on your desk, as they create bad chi.

On the Cheap

Feng shui doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are some low-cost tips:

  • As you enter your office, the far left hand corner is your Wealth and Prosperity corner. This is a good place for a small tabletop fountain, a valuable item or even an affirmation. Blues, purples and reds are the colors of prosperity. Can you include these colors in something that makes you feel prosperous?
  • Position your computer strategically: Keep it on the west side of your desk to enhance creativity, and on the southeast side to generate income.
  • Place symbols of good fortune—the dragon, phoenix, unicorn and turtle—in your workspace.
  • It’s always good to define your personal space. If you work in a cubicle, for example, place a small rug at its entrance – this will discourage people from intruding on you while you work.
