Green Living QA: Is There A Non-Toxic Carpet Deodorizer?

Q:
Is there a non-toxic carpet deodorizer?
A:
Most products used to clean carpets are heavily scented with artificial fragrance. This can be an irritant to eyes, nose and even our hormones! So a really easy, economical and non-toxic way to clean a carpet, even musty ones, is to deodorize it with baking soda. You will need several pounds of it for a 9 by 12 foot room. Sprinkle it liberally over the entire carpet. Wait 15 minutes or longer, then vacuum.
When you vacuum do it with a well sealed high quality HEPA vacuum cleaner. This can do a much better job of cleaning your carpets than the cheaper vacuum cleaners found at most department stores.
Also, a good doormat will stop a lot of toxins right at the door. Or, take your shoes off when entering your house. I love having a shoeless home. Have some slippers or socks handy for guests, and don’t be afraid to ask them to remove their shoes.
