The Food and Drug Administraton (FDA) has released its final report on lead levels in lipstick. The FDA found there was lead in 400 brands of lipstick it tested and conlcuded the levels were not harmful.
A statement on the FDA website says the"FDA has recently received a number of inquiries from consumers concerned about the amount of lead present in lipstick. FDA's studies have found no lead levels that would pose safety concerns when lipstick is used as intended."
There was levels of lead found in all the major cosmetic and lipstick brands inlcuding; L'Oreal, Cover Girl, Maybelline, Avon, Stargazer, Burts Bees, and Revlon.

Though the FDA says the levels of lead found in lipstick are perfectly safe, other researchers disagree ,including an advisory committee reporting to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
It issued "a report stating that there is no safe level of lead for children, yet also stressing the urgency of preventing lead exposure for both children and pregnant women. "While lipstick is not sold to children, any mother will tell you it's hard to keep them away from it," writes Forbes magazine on the issue, adding "and pregnant women are often not appropriately cautioned about lead levels in lipstick."
The advocacy group the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics says the FDA should set specific limits on lead levels in lipsticks and other cosmentics. It is sponsoring a contest called Kiss Lead Goodbye Contest - on until February 29th.
