Kids and sugar

My daughter loves sugar and it is hard to control her. we don't keep anything but dark organic chocolate in the house (not her favorite) but she finds junk outside. how much control can you really have? and how much is necessary?

Seems like you have the right approach there. You don't have to be a "supplier" -- but on the other hand, you don't want to create an atmosphere where sugar is this illicit, coveted substance. That would seem to lead to more abuse. You can see though, indeed, i do think sugar is basically a drug, so I absolutely share your concerns! Unfortunately, I think you have to accept that you have, at best, partial control over the situation.

Not sure how old your daughter is, but for younger kids especially those organic Yummy Earth suckers/lollipops are good -- I give them to my nieces and they like them even more than the ones with high fructose corn syrup. Incidentally, a recent audit found that 50% of the HF corn syrup in American foods contained MERCURY. Yes, you heard me right. MERCURY. How the heck did it get there is what I want to know!

The problem with teenagers especially is that your instinct is to lecture them about things like sugar but then they purposely do the exact opposite just because it's in their nature.

i remember eating tons oif sweet stuff when young. i guess the difference is that HFCS was less prevalent. Much of it was homemade, too. I am sympathetic towards any parent having to deal with the challenge of healthy eating for children and a world that seems to be stacked against it.
