Q:

How can I tell if my baby is hungry? How do I know if she is getting enough to eat?

A:

Learning your baby's cues is one of the first - and hardest - challenges of early parenthood.  Babies cry for many reasons, sometimes due to hunger, others for a variety of important needs. Babies may cry, suck, root or otherwise seek to nurse when they are hungry.  If you are breastfeeding, keep in mind that newborns feed often (at least every two hours) and that nursing on your baby's demand will help establish a healthy milk supply.  Babies will also nurse more often during growth spurts or illnesses.  Talk with your healthcare provider about appropriate weight gain and what is considered a normal range of wet and dirty diapers for a baby that is getting adequate nutrition.
