Q:
How concerned should I be about BPA and what are my choices to avoid it?
A:
Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a legitimate concern as it has been linked to breast cancer and early puberty in young girls. BPA is very prevalent in our society, appearing not only in the lining of most cans but also in cash register receipts, pizza boxes, and many plastics. Unfortunately, many of the products made from new synthetic materials that are labeled as BPA-free also do not have a long-term safety record that can assure us that these are good alternatives. Personally, I prefer to avoid canned foods altogether and to pack leftovers in glass or stainless steel containers that I believe are safer for my family.
