Q:

How do I stop my toddler from playing with his food?

A:

My personal approach is that play is creative and explorative for young children, including when it comes to food.  Food comes in a fascinating range of colors and textures, shapes and smells.  Playing with food is one way children learn about it and have fun with it.  Making mealtime fun is a great way to encourage healthy eating. If your child wants to make mountains out of mashed sweet potatoes to make eating fun, then celebrate it!  Let them mash it and eat it - and remember how great and fun the food was!  Of course, if they are throwing food or creating a disruption for others at the table that's another issue but a little play can help ease the stress of the day and just might inspire some creativity!
