Q:

My husband and I disagree on how to discipline our toddler.  What do you think about spanking?

A:

As a holistic parent who follows an attachment parenting philosophy, I am an advocate for positive discipline instead of spanking.  Dr. Sears, one of attachment parenting's greatest advocates, sums up 10 reasons not to spank your child that are very compelling, including the fact that it can create self-esteem issues and is largely ineffective as a disciplinary tool.  Positive discipline is about creating strong communication and trust with your child instead of creating a power struggle.  For some great ideas to get you started, you might check out this helpful page: http://www.positivediscipline.com/articles/power.html.
