Q:

What age can a kid start going to school alone? What age can they start going out with their friends alone to play? To see a movie? To go to the mall?

A:

Perhaps the better question is "At what age is your child responsible, assertive, and able to ask for help?".  That, of course, depends upon the child.  Even though your child may know the way to school, going by him or herself means being able to handle a variety of potential situations - from unfriendly bullies to ill-meaning strangers.  If your child is assertive and understands ways to manage such situations, then that is the appropriate age.  Pairing children up with neighbors and friends may also help reduce risks, as well as taking into account your neighborhood and environment.
