Q:

What kinds of soaps and shampoos are best for my baby.  Can you recommend specific brands?

A:

Personal care products and cosmetics, even those designed for babies, are often loaded with a variety of chemicals and toxins that could be detrimental to your child.  The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics released an alarming study in 2009 showing that many conventional brands of baby products contained toxins such as formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane.  As with so many things, you need to shop consciously and read labels.  Brands may cite "natural" or "gentle" on their labels but since these terms are not regulated by federal agencies, they do not provide accurate information on the toxicity of a product.  Familiarize yourself with the ingredients, make use of information resources such as the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Database to review product toxicity levels, and seek out certified organic products that are verified by a third party.
