Parenting QA: What's The Best Way To Help My Baby Sleep?

What's the best way to help my baby sleep through the night? Should I get a sound machine?
First, sleeping through the night is not the norm for most babies. In fact, most babies, children, and adults wake at least once during the night although babies have not yet developed the self-soothing skills to easily go back to sleep. It is normal for babies to wake between 2 and 4 times each night, more for some babes, less for others, and these may vary with age, health, teething, hunger, growth spurts, and stress. Sleep deprivation is indeed the greatest challenge for new parents. A sound machine may help a child who is a light sleeper and for whom noise is an issue, but many other factors come into play. Elizabeth Pantley, author of the "No-Cry Sleep Solution" suggests maintaining a regular sleep routine and keeping your child's sleep environment comfortable as keys to achieving better sleep.
