Parenting QA: When Do Babies Benefit From Group Play?

Q:
When do babies benefit from group play (if at all)?
A:
All children learn from social play and communication. From little babies to older children, social play helps them to develop communication skills and to learn how to interact with others. Social play helps children to learn to share, to develop cooperation skills, and to begin to resolve conflict. But interactive play between children does not generally start until about age 2. Toddlers may be stimulated by the presence of other toddlers in their environment but there are often challenges with sharing and cooperative play at this early age. Don't let that deter you, though. Playgroups are not just for kids! Moms need social interaction and support. Even with newborns, moms should gather for playgroups to share in the challenges of motherhood and strengthen their own social bonds!
