Arthritis: The Conventional View

"Arthritis" is a general term to describe chronic pain in the joints that is often accompanied by swelling, redness, inflammation, and limitation of function. Its causes can be the wearing out of the cartilage (osteoarthritis), or inflammation (rheumatoid arthritis). Dr. Goldberg advocates NSAID's, surgical repair of the joint, or joint replacement in severe cases. His prescription: take medication, lose weight, wear elastic braces and exercise. Why is the last so important? Because, in Dr. Goldberg's own words, "If you don't use it you lose it."
