IBS: The Conventional View
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, for example diarrhea or constipation, with no underlying definable organic cause. Other symptoms include: painful cramping in the left lower abdominal region, bloating, increased gas, indigestion heartburn, difficulty swallowing and sexual dysfunction. Dr. Goldberg recommends cutting fatty foods, dairy, chocolate and caffeine from your diet, and developing a stress-management program. In severe cases, he also prescribes non-gas producing fiber supplements, antidepressants, and antispasmodics.
