While we may think of Yoga as a trendy, new form of exercise, the fact is, nothing could be further from the truth. Yoga has been in existence since the 3rd Millennium BC. With origins in India, the word, Yoga, is derived from the ancient Sanskrit - yuj - meaning, joining, union, or attachment. The goal of yoga is unity of body, mind and spirit, also termed moksha, enlightenment, or release. The fact that Yoga remains fresh, new and in-demand today is a tribute to its enduring value in our ever-more-stressful world.
Choose A Style Of Hatha Yoga To Suit Your Needs
Hatha Yoga: In the 15th Century, Yogi Swatmarama, a Hindu sage, introduced Hatha Yoga and devised the classic Yoga manual: Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Hatha Yoga is not just one type of Yoga. There are many different kinds of Yoga that fall under this heading. The purest, traditional form of Hatha Yoga combines meditation, relaxation and the practice of physical postures; however, many variations on the original practice have developed over the centuries.
The form of Hatha Yoga most people are familiar with today is Ashtanga (aka: Astanga) Yoga. This is a mostly physical form of Yoga that focuses on the Ashtanga Series. This type of practice consists of performing a very demanding series of poses that can be completed within one or two hours. One very popular Ashtanga Series is the Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskara), which exercises the entire body while calming the mind and spirit.
Iyengar Yoga:
In the 1930s, Yogi BKS Iyengar developed a form of Hatha Yoga known as Iyengar Yoga. This type of Yoga practice focuses on precision in performing poses. Attention to detail and correct performance of poses takes precedence over exercise in this form of Yoga. Iyengar Yoga Schools and studios can be found all around the world.
Bikram Yoga:
In the 1940s in Calcutta, India, Bikram Choudy created this challenging form of yoga practice. Also known as Hot Yoga or Power Yoga, Bikram Yoga is extremely popular today as a challenging form of exercise and a path to weight loss. Bikram Yoga is performed in a hot room (100 degrees) with a humidity level of 40%. The reasoning behind this is that the high temperature and humidity level help keep the muscles warm and flexible and assist the body in detoxification through perspiration. Bikram Yoga is a fast paced practice of 26 poses done in a rapid, exacting sequence that raises the heart rate and works up a sweat. Bikram Yoga is an excellent form of Yoga practice for people who are already in good shape and want to add a new challenge to their fitness program. It is not a good place to begin your fitness journey. For that, you would be wise to choose one of the gentler forms of Yoga practice.
